At Maulden Lower School we teach 7.5 hours of discrete English (reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting) each week. The document below gives an overview of the skills taught. The daily English lessons are linked to the half termly 'theme'.
We teach phonics as a discrete lesson in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 using the Phonic Bug programme with interactive resources. However, we encourage teachers to make use of many different resources that are available from other schemes or websites.
In Key Stage 2, the teaching and learning of new graphemes is predominately done through the teaching of spellings, although it will also be covered in other areas of the curriculum where appropriate, especially during literacy lessons.
If you have any questions regarding our teaching of phonics, please speak to your child's class teacher.
